Rene Russo grew up in Burbank. Her parents are Nino Russo and Shirley Balocca. Shirley is an barmaid. The father of the family, a sculptor as well as a mechanic, left the family when Rene was two years old and her mother tended Rene and her sister Toni in a home with a single mother. Her father had Italian origins and her mom was Italian with German-English Irish heritage. When she was in junior high school, Rene was afflicted with Scoliosis, and was required to wear a full-torso brace. The students at her school called them Jolly Green Giant because she was so tall. Even though she went to Burroughs High School alongside Ron Howard (a fellow classmate) and even having her brace off, she still felt like a lone one. She was a ranger. Rene was unable to handle academics as well as the social aspects in high school. The school dropped her out of 10th grade. Because of the financial strain, she took on various part-time jobs over the next two years, many with advantages of being free. She was the hostess at a film theater, which permitted her to go to the movies for free. Additionally, she cooked food at restaurants, and was eligible for no cost Disneyland admission. There were times when she had more than one job at a time. She worked at an eyeglass factory, where she was responsible for that was responsible for assessing lenses.
